Germany Needs Immigrants!

Germany Needs Immigrants!

Make it in Germany

Germany is still a proud and respected world power, even without any aircraft carrier. Germany, nevertheless, faces the stern challenge of slow population growth and an aging population. Studies have shown that Germany may need more than 390,000 skill immigrants each year to sustain its economic growth. For this very reason, Germany is also making aggressive moves to attract immigrants, especially high-skilled immigrants. The official website sponsored by Ministry of Economics, make-it-in-gemany.com, is where the image above is from. Such a well-made portal is an evidence of such sincere attempts.

Germany, however, goes much further than offering an informational website. The most aggressive component of their plan is free tuition for public universities, wherever you are from. According to Slate, this great benefit applies to all students. This is a great gesture to attract talents from students from other countries under German influence. This is an even greater attraction for determined young talents who mind not the difficulty of studying German.

Free tuition is great. However, long term policies do not solve short-term needs. As German population age, retire and decease, Germany needs more qualified workers from Non-E.U. states. Some studies even go as far as projecting a need of 590,000 qualified workers through work visa to sustain future economic growth. There is greater competition for talents within E.U. and Germany must find sustainable ways to assimilate high-skilled immigrants from the rest of the world. E.U. immigrants tend to be West Europeans able to blend into German society. Refugees, on the contrary, may experience greater difficulties.

The need for skilled immigrants is clear. Yet, how to make them feel at home would be the next challenge. Facing China, a resurging world power, Germany also has the secrete weapon of immigration, if and only if Germany will be persistent. With high quality of life and a law-abiding population, Germans need not work hard to make their country more attractive. Germans only need to strike the balance of being proud of German heritage and showing inclusiveness to immigrants. Only in this regard are Americans leading the rest of the world.
