Naturalization & Citizenship

Becoming a U.S. Citizen through Naturalization

For many Americans becoming a United States citizen is effortless and automatic at birth. However for immigrants, becoming a U.S. citizen– and therefore obtaining the right to legally reside in the United States, travel to and from the country, gain the right to vote, and be protected under the Constitution — can be a long and difficult process. But one way foreign nationals can gain full citizenship is through naturalization.

Requirements for Naturalization

Naturalization is a process immigrants may undertake to become lawful United States Citizens. Generally to qualify, immigrants must meet the following naturalization requirements:

    • Be 18 years or older

    • Be a permanent lawful resident of the United States

    • Be a person of good moral character

    • Have a basic understanding of the English Language

    • Have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government

  • Have maintained a consistent residence for the past 5 years
