Before you can apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate for an F or M student visa, you must first apply to and be accepted by a SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) approved school.
An F-1 visa is required for those that plan on attending the following institutions in the United States:

- High School
- Private Elementary School
- Another academic institution, including a language training problem
However, an M-1 visa is required when attending a vocational school or other recognized non-academic institutions in the U.S.
